I am so fortunate to live in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado. This area is a photographer’s dream which puts on an incredible display of nature at any given moment. At times there is so much to see that it is hard to choose where to go – from the beautiful alpenglow atop the Needle Mountains to the brilliantly colored fall leaves, or a gorgeous sunset/sunrise so frequently upon us.
The possibilities are endless and I struggle daily to use my camera to try and best depict what my eyes are so blessed to witness. I am rarely satisfied with my shot because I have come to realize that no camera can ever replicate what I see, feel, and experience when God’s creation is set in motion before me. That is probably why I am so obsessed with sunset/sunrise shots. As any photographer can attest, they quickly get the heart rate and adrenalin pumping. At that magic moment, the lighting is unequaled with it’s special saturation and contrast, and if you blink, it’s gone.
My primary focus is the San Juan Mountains but I do occasionally venture off to photograph the diverse areas surrounding us which includes the world renowned Grand Canyon, Canyonlands, and Arches National Parks. My favorite places are the less well know areas of the desert environment. Time spent visiting family in British Columbia, Canada has also opened up a whole new opportunity of beautiful scenery to capture.
I hope sharing these photos will encourage you to get outdoors today and see what beautiful scene awaits you – it may be a sunset, the waves splashing up on the shore, a beautiful alpenglow highlighting a towering mountain peak, the peaceful sound of a river winding its way down a valley, or whatever brings you peace of mind…
