Needle’s Moonrise

Needles Moonset.jpg

I anxiously awaited for the nearly full moon to pop over the peaks not knowing exactly where it would occur.  Then I heard a whisper from my son who who said “Look over there, can you see a faint light coming from the left side of the peak?”  And wow, it was faint at first but then it quickly turned into a bright golden, yellowish glow.  But then we realized that the clouds were too thick to see the full moon but instead we were treated with this unique colorful glob rising over the jagged peaks.  My son shouted out, “This is one of the best days of my life!”, as we were snapping off shots as fast as our fingers would allow.  Definitely a great moment to remember!

King Cloud

Driving up the Animas Valley around sunset last evening I was greatly rewarded with a very unusual sight. As I made it to the base of the Needle Mountains, an epic cumulous cloud had developed just to the right of these majestic peaks. This was no ordinary storm cloud as it formed all by itself in the middle of January. It completely dominated the mountains with its massive size. It was a beautiful, eerie sight that made me extremely glad to be alive to witness and photograph such a gorgeous scene of nature at work in Colorado!
