Animas Valley Almost Spring

After record snowfall here in the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado the lower elevations have shed most of their snow with the higher elevations still loaded. It is not quite spring yet but an unusually warm March has brought us a lot closer than normal.

This winter has be interesting to say the least. We’ve had heavy rains in the lower elevations with little snow. This is not typical around here.  My family in BC, Canada have had record snow along to coast of Vancouver where it rarely snows.  I think the weather just got a little mixed up this year.  We’ll have to wait until next year to see if it was just a fluke….

The Animas Valley is hard to get a nice sunset shot but I finally had the opportunity to catch one.

End of the Storm

A major winter storm has gripped the the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado for the past month with non-stop rain and snow with no breaks in-between.  The sun disappeared during this time which is unusual for our area.

It was so nice to finally see the sun come out again with the clouds in retreat.  On a positive note, the above average snowpack should result in some nice wildflowers this summer.  In the meantime, I’ll keep enjoying the beautiful winter scenes now before us…

Below Zero

Needle Mountains Belt of Venus well after sunset

Blowing snow just after sunset, San Juan Mountains

The day after a recent winter storm moved out of the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado, the temperature quickly dropped below zero. Before the sun set, the frigid air was compounded by blowing snow which made for some really cold body parts that were exposed to this beautiful scene of nature.

After sunset, the wind calmed down and by the time the colored layers of the belt of venus set in, the frigid air had cleared somewhat providing for a nice look showcasing the Needle Mountains. Pigeon (left) and Turret Peaks stood out beautifully with the fresh snow clinging to their steep slopes and fir trees below forming the perfect Christmas scene.

Wising you all a wonderful Christmas and holiday season!
